BUMP - Bump

The origins of this US band have been lost in the mists of time. Some people reckon they came from Michigan and others favour Canada, but either way they produced quite an impressive album. We do know that it came out in 1970, and comprised soft rock and progressive psychedelia. Opening track 'Sing Into The Wind' is a strange one to start with, as it is not representative of the rest of the album at all. If anything, it sounds like a nasal take on the Bee Gees, and is actually quite commercial. 'State Of Affairs' is more like it, with some fine West Coast harmonies and a gentle overall feel. 'Daydream Song' makes fine use of organ and guitar for a progressive gem, but this is followed by the (thankfully short) vaudeville track 'Holly Thorndike'. Luckily the fuzz guitar crashes back in for 'Got To Get You Back' and we are back with the up-tempo rock music, which is continued onto one of the album's highlights 'Spider's Eyes'. The closing 'Lifelines' brings back the Bee Gees vocals for a lengthy psychedelic workout to end this fine album. Out on CD and well worth a listen.
