GUY GARVEY – Courting The Squall (Polydor)

As you might expect, Guy Garvey’s first solo album doesn’t stray too far from the sound of Elbow, but the extra freedom of doing it himself possibly means that he doesn’t feel that he has to include a couple of anthemic crowd-pleasers on here. Some of the songs seem more experimental, but with his mates from I Am Kloot and The Whip helping out, the playing is never less than exemplary. An intriguing first effort.
