ELIZABETH COOK – Exodus Of Venus (Agent Love Records)

After releasing the country-flavoured ‘Welder’ in 2010, Cook took a break, and during this traumatic six year period she divorced, had a stint in rehab, and suffered the deaths of six people close to her, including her parents. All of this has come out in the gritty blues-based songs on this disc, with the sweet country feel of her previous albums now replaced by a darker, swampy R’n’B sound. Recommended.
